Ben Witherington III The Gospel Code: Novel Claims About Jesus, Mary Magdalene and Da Vinci Downers Grove, IL Intervarsity Press 2004 083083267X / 9780830832675 Trade Paperback As New The popularity of Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code has caused Christian apologists to address what they consider to be its heresies and historical errors. Witherington, a New Testament scholar at Asbury Theological Seminary, intends in this volume to add his voice to the growing criticism of Brown's novel. Each chapter treats an issue—the formation of the canon, the "married Jesus" theory, etc.—and then offers a wealth of background material to support an evangelical Christian viewpoint. Drawing on his background in Christian theology and church history, Witherington explains his position in a lucid and sometimes whimsical style. He is particularly strong when exploring and explaining the processes of textual criticism and redaction, and in helping readers understand the flow of Christian history and the development of doctrine. The influence of Gnosticism, ancient and modern, likewise receives extensive treatment. The book closes with an appeal for a more rational, and less speculative, consideration of the Jesus story. Quite apart from its treatment of Brown's novel, this book is a fine exposition of mainstream evangelical teaching and merits wide readership. Price:

Benson Bobrick Wide as the Waters: The Story of the English Bible and the Revolution it Inspired New York, NY Penguin Books 2001 0142000590 / 9780142000595 Trade Paperback Good The Story of the English Bible and the Revolution It Inspired is a brisk and gripping work of history, religion, and literary criticism. Translation of the King James Bible took centuries to complete, and Bobrick provides colorful descriptions of the distinctive contributions of various translators who took part in the project, particularly John Wyclif in the 15th century and William Tyndale in the 16th century. (Tyndale, he points out, is the second most widely quoted writer, after Shakespeare, in the English language ["eat, drink, and be merry," is Tyndale's phrase; so is "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak"].) Wide as the Waters interprets each translator's work according to its contemporary political context in England. The book's most dramatic passages are found in its account of Henry VIII's showdown with Rome, which resulted in (among other things) Tyndale's execution. Although Bobrick may overstate the singularity of the Bible's influence on the English Revolution (he asserts that the concepts of liberty and free will that guided revolutionaries who overthrew Charles I were primarily derived from the King James Bible), his argument is, at the very least, an effective and engaging reminder of Scripture's liberating power. D. James Kennedy & Jerry Newcombe What if Jesus Had Never Been Born Nashville, TN Thomas Nelson Publishers 1994 0785282610 / 9780785282617 Hard Cover Very Good We live in a cynical age in which only one prejudice is tolerated--anti-Christian bigotry. Yet despite the unbridled slanders and attacks against the faith, one powerful truth is undeniable: if Christ had never been born, nearly every facet of human life would be much more miserable than it is today. Arranged topically and presenting compelling, little-known historical facts, What If Jesus Had Never Been Born? clearly demonstrates that an enormous array of benefits to humankind--from economics to art to government, science to civil liberties, morality to health, and beyond--would never have occurred had Jesus Christ not lived. Dc Talk and Voice of the Martyrs Jesus Freak: Stories of Those Who Stood for Jesus Tulsa, OK Albury Publishing 1999 1577780728 / 9781577780724 Trade Paperback As New Jesus Freaks by dc Talk and The Voice of the Martyrs, is a companion volume to dc Talk's album of the same name. It is a book for teenagers about martyrdom, containing dozens of profiles of figures ranging from Stephen, whose martyrdom is described in the Book of Acts, to "Anila and Perveen," two teenage Pakistani girls and Christian believers. In 1997, Perveen was killed for running away in order to avoid marrying a Muslim man; Anila was imprisoned for helping her friend escape. In an introduction to the book, Michael Tait explains its purpose: "In a world built on free will instead of God's will, we must be the Freaks. While we may not be called to martyr our lives, we must martyr our way of life. We must put our selfish ways to death and march to a different beat. Then the world will see Jesus." Donald X. Burt Friendship & Society: An Introduction to Augustine's Practical Philosophy Grand Rapids, MI Eerdmans 1999 0802846823 / 9780802846822 Trade Paperback As New An engaging look at the relevance of Augustine's thought for life in our contemporary world. What can I know? What can I hope for? What should I do? These are three perennial questions of life, and few thinkers have offered such penetrating answers as Augustine. FRIENDSHIP AND SOCIETY is a fascinating volume meant for those interested in what one of history's greatest minds had to say about life in an imperfect world. Bridging expert scholarship and a popular readership, this volume assumes no in-depth knowledge of philosophy or prior acquaintance with Augustine's writings. An introductory reflection on the human predicament is followed by a clear and accurate outline of Augustine's thought on such relevant topics as ethics, politics, society, history, the family, war and peace, crime and punishment, and church and state. Unifying the book is a powerful argument that "friendship" can be the tie that binds us all. Price:

E. Anna Nixon A Century of Planting: A History of the American Friends Mission in India Newberg, OR The Barclay Press 1985 0913342556 / 9780913342558 Trade Paperback Good Previous owners name is on first blank page. In the beginning Friends missionaries in the Bundelkhand region of India were all women. They deliberately set out to find a difficult area, untouched with the Gospel, as the place to plant their mission. On April 1, 1896, they moved into backward, benighted Bundelkhand in the grips of famine. Over a period of centuries Bundelkhandi people have been sharpened on drastic anvils of poverty, suffering, and intrigue beyond the telling. The marvel is that, once planted in that hostile environment, the Gospel has continued to this day. A Century of Planting tells the story of the ministry of the Evangelical Friends Church—Eastern Region in India. It is a testimony of the promises of God to the people who live there and the missionaries who have worked together in the planting and harvesting of the Gospel of Christ. Price:

Frank S. Mead Handbook of Denominations in the United States Nashville Tenessee Abingdon Press 1970 0687165687 / 9780687165681 Cloth Very Good The Handbook of Denominations attempts to portray some of the depth and breadth of the major religious traditions in the United States. The religious bodies are grouped in family categories of Abrahamic religions, arranged chronologically: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The information for each group within these families was provided by the religious organizations themselves and focuses on the doctrines, statistics, and histories of institutions. Such information is valuable for making sense of our culture and our neighbors, although much of the inner life of each denomination is not part of such a presentation. This handbook is a helpful resource for clergy, laity, journalists, and the curious who want to know more about the many facets of religious tradition in the United States today. Price:

Gary Smalley & John Trent The Blessing New York Pocket Books 1990 0761737430 Mass Market Paperback Very Good Gary Smalley and John Trent's best-selling book offers a fresh, updated look at the life-changing gift the Bible calls the blessing. Many of us--perhaps unknowingly--spend a lifetime striving for this acceptance. The unconditional love and approval that comes with the blessing is an important element of our self-esteem and emotional well-being. In The Blessing, Dr. John Trent tells of his search to receive the blessing from his father and the new insight--and deeper blessing--he received from God as he sought to pick up the pieces of his shattered dream. And Gary Smalley expands the concept of the blessing to include eight ways to bless adult children. I never realized how powerful--and how necessary--the blessing has become to my older children until now. So if you have older children who have moved away from home, they're never out-of-reach of the blessing. The Blessing is a powerful book no family should be without. Within its pages, readers will find solid, practical advice on how to be a blessing as well as how to insure that your parents, spouse, and children all feel the security of family approval. Price:
