The Grolier Library of Science Biographies - 10 Volume set
8 The Grolier Library of Science Biographies - 10 Volume set
Danbury, CT Grolier Educational 1997 0717276260 / 9780717276264 Hard Cover Very Good Ex-Library
Great shape. Clean and sturdy. Has typical library stamps. Grade 9 Up. Featuring 2000 men and women from ancient times to the present, this well-researched work imparts biographical information about renowned scientists such as Nils Bohr, Marie Curie, Sigmund Freud, Jane Goodall, Antoine Lavoisier, and Dmitri Mendeleev. There is marked emphasis on individuals working in the "traditional pure sciences"?chemistry, biology, physics, astronomy, and the Earth sciences?and a solid selection of notables in the fields of engineering and technology. However, coverage of pioneers in medicine, mathematics, anthropology, philosophy, and psychology is more limited. The alphabetically arranged, partial to double-page entries include a serviceable portrait (where available). Dry, uninspired text investigates the subjects' education, training, career milestones, and the content and importance of their contributions. These achievements are explained in technical jargon that requires background knowledge of the topic to comprehend the material. The glossaries do little to elucidate these challenging concepts as scientific terms are also defined in a complex, unapproachable manner. The articles contain constant references to the work and theories of other researchers with whom lay students will not be familiar. Unfortunately, there are no details about the pioneers' inspirations. Each volume contains a solid list for further research and a comprehensive index of the entire set, which groups the scientists by country and field. Peggy Saari and Stephen Allison's Scientists (UXL, 1996) is a meticulously structured, user-friendly tool that showcases 150 lively biographical pieces. Although the scope is not as wide, the world of science is presented in a fashion that is accessible and appealing to general audiences.?Hillary Jan Donitz-Goldstein, New York Public Library Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Colorado Springs, CO Multnomah 2008 1601421125 / 9781601421128 Hard Cover Used As New Used As New
A generation stands on the brink of a "rebelution." A growing movement of young people is rebelling against the low expectations of today's culture by choosing to "do hard things" for the glory of God. And Alex and Brett Harris are leading the charge. Do Hard Things is the Harris twins' revolutionary message in its purest and most compelling form, giving readers a tangible glimpse of what is possible for teens who actively resist cultural lies that limit their potential. Combating the idea of adolescence as a vacation from responsibility, the authors weave together biblical insights, history, and modern examples to redefine the teen years as the launching pad of life. Then they map out five powerful ways teens can respond for personal and social change. Written by teens for teens, Do Hard Things is packed with humorous personal anecdotes, practical examples, and stories of real-life rebelutionaries in action. This rallying cry from the heart of an already-happening teen revolution challenges a generation to lay claim to a brighter future, starting today. "Most people don't expect you to understand what we're going to tell you in this book. And even if you understand, they don't expect you to care. And even if you care, they don't expect you to do anything about it. And even if you do something about it, they don't expect it to last. We do." – Alex and Brett

This book is not another Christian-teenage-girl ''survival guide.''ť So Much More shows how Christian girls can wage war with the world and win. The Botkin sisters focus on how young women can rise above their God-hating culture and change it for the better. Today, countless young ladies face difficult problems and challenging questions. While many long for godly purpose in their lives, their bewilderment mounts when they observe broken homes, distant fathers, overwhelmed mothers, degrading college courses, and a lack of spiritual guidance --” both at home and at church. As hope for security and stability fades, it is no wonder that many young ladies feel orphaned, unprotected, and without hope for their futures. Within the pages of this book, discover practical, biblical solutions for the young woman who wants to do so much more than just ''survive'' in a savagely feministic, anti-Christian culture. Find the answers a girl is not likely to get from her church, her peers, or her culture.

Phillipsburg, NJ P&R 2012 1596383941 / 9781596383944 Trade Paperback New
The lights dim . . . the smoke rises . . . the band starts playing. It's a familiar scene, as youth ministries everywhere use entertaining and trendy approaches to draw in teens. But when the lights come on and the fog clears, what do we find? Far too many teenagers raised in Christian homes drift away from the church after high school. Why is this true? Could it be because youth groups, in seeking to elevate experience over truth, have left teens dissatisfied and hungry for that truth? Brian Cosby demonstrates a ministry approach that nurtures teens and brings them back for more -- one solidly grounded in Christ and patterned after the means of grace: the Word, sacraments, prayer, service, and community. Learn how much teenagers not only need a deeper ministry, but want one too.

Welcome to the Revolution: A Field Guide for New Believers, Brian Tome
44 Brian Tome Welcome to the Revolution: A Field Guide for New Believers
Nashville, TN Thomas Nelson Publishers 2008 0849920051 / 9780849920059 Trade Paperback As New
As Brian Tome was talking to a new Christ-follower in his office, he realized that he had nothing on his bookshelf that would give her the "straight talk" on the radical new life she was about to begin. So he penned Welcome to the Revolution a bold, honest, humorous guide to joining the ever-advancing Kingdom of God. "The Revolution," as Tome calls the Christian life, is already underway, and while it is both exhilarating and fulfilling, it's challenging and confusing at times. This book will guide the reader from the basics (navigating through Christian kitsch at the bookstore) to the practical (Bible reading and building community) to the profound (concepts of forgiveness and using imagination in prayer). To those people who have previously dismissed the "Christian" life, or those who want to learn more about God in an accessible way, this book will be the breath that clears the air and shows them how to follow a Revolutionary God.

Ventura, CA Regal Books 2007 0830744924 / 9780830744923 Trade Paperback Very Good
In our postmodern world, we are so driven by our emotions that in “living for the moment” we’ve forgotten to guard our most precious treasure—our hearts. Young people may not realize it, but acts that appear innocent—such as e-mail and instant messages—can entangle our emotions and lead the heart to places it should not go. Most people give their hearts away long before they give their bodies away, so it is imperative that young people learn the importance of emotional purity, how to avoid the steps that too often lead to a physical downfall and how to live pure lives. Like talking to a big sister who’s gone before them, reading Eyes Wide Open will give young people the necessary keys for making decisions about purity, love and romance. She also shows them how to acquire a thirst for purity as they realize it is not just another rule, but a path that leads to a dimension of deep and fresh living where they can truly thrive.

Spiritual Junk Food: The Dumbing Down of Christian Youth, Cathy Mickels & Audrey McKeever
57 Cathy Mickels & Audrey McKeever Spiritual Junk Food: The Dumbing Down of Christian Youth
Mukilteo, WA Winepress 1999 1579211690 / 9781579211691 Trade Paperback Very Good
There are several highlights in the first section of the book. Spiritual Junk Food: The Dumbing Down of Christian Youth is a stinging indictment on the state of educational curricula promoted by leading Christian publishers. This is one of the most important issues facing the Christian church today. Drawing from fifteen years of experience in public education, Cathy Mickels and Audrey McKeever make a convincing case that Christian publishers are marketing shallow, fast-food methods for teaching spiritual truths. The faith of Christian youth is being undermined with theories first espoused by humanist educators, not people interested in sharing the truth of God's righteousness and power. In this well-documented expose, parents are warned that the same worldly, humanistic ideas and activities Christians have fought in our nation's schools have now invaded the church. Straightforward biblical teaching is being traded for relativism, group thinking, and controversial games. Whether it is by teaching Christian youth to hug trees and "think green," role-play a Bible passage soap-opera style to simulate the excitement of temptation, or view Steven Speilberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark for a lesson on the Book of Revelation, the authors predict the result will all be the same: the dumbing down of Christian youth.

Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens
60 Charles Dickens Oliver Twist
Mineola, NY Dover 2002 0486424537 / 9780486424538 Trade Paperback Very Good
Starved and mistreated, empty bowl in hand, the young hero musters the courage to approach his master, saying, "Please, sir, I want some more." Oliver Twist's famous cry of the heart has resounded with readers since the novel's initial appearance in 1837, and the book remains a popular favorite with fans of all ages. Dickens was no stranger to the pain of hunger and the degradation of poverty. He poured his own youthful experience of Victorian London's unspeakable squalor into this realistic depiction of the link between destitution and crime. Oliver escapes his miserable servitude by running away to London, where he unwillingly but inevitably joins a scabrous gang of thieves. Masterminded by the loathsome Fagin, the underworld crew features some of Dickens' most memorable characters, including the juvenile pickpocket known as the Artful Dodger, the vicious Bill Sikes, and gentle Nancy, an angel of self-sacrifice. A profound social critic, Dickens introduced genteel readers to the problems of the poor in a way that had rarely been attempted before. This tale of the struggle between hope and cruelty continues to speak to modern audiences.
