Port Townsend, WA Copper Canyon Press 2004 1556591985 / 9781556591983 Paperback Good
Sturdy. Light wear. Antonio Machado (1875–1939) is Spain’s master poet, the explorer of dream and landscape, and of consciousness below language. Widely regarded as the greatest twentieth century poet who wrote in Spanish, Machado—like his contemporary Rilke—is intensely introspective and meditative. In this collection, the unparalleled translator Willis Barnstone, returns to the poet with whom he first started his distinguished career, offering a new bilingual edition which provides a sweeping assessment of Machado’s work. In addition, Border of a Dream includes a reminiscence by Nobel Laureate Juan Ramón Jiménez and a foreword by John Dos Passos. from "Proverbs and Songs" Absolute faith. We neither are nor will be. Our whole life is borrowed We brought nothing. With nothing we leave. * You say nothing is created? Don’t worry. With clay of the earth make a cup so your brother can drink. Born near Seville, Spain, Antonio Machado turned to a career in writing and translating in order to help support his family after the death of his father in 1893. His growing reputation as a poet led to teaching posts in various cities in Spain and, eventually, he returned to finish his degree from the University of Madrid in 1918. He remained in Madrid after the outbreak of civil war, committed to the Republican cause, but the violence finally forced him to flee. He died an exile in France.

5 Antonio Machado The Landscape of Castile (Spanish Edition)
Buffalo, NY White Pine Press 2005 1893996263 / 9781893996267 Paperback Very Good
This bilingual edition of the book central to Machado’s work, Campos de Castilla, reflects Machado’s life after he moved to the small town of Soria. Written between 1907 and 1917, the poems address his marriage and the death of his young wife from tuberculosis. Art Davis 2012 1477617175 / 9781477617175 Paperback Very Good Signed w/a note by the Author
This book is a compilation of moments, none of which were predicted, or planned. As I titled my forward, Things Happen, obviously things did. Most bits are personal about family, happy and sad, but with love. In some, I take editorial privilege, expose my religious thoughts, weep in remorse of loss. Celebrate marriage and birth. I have more to tell, but this book is quite filled.

2009 144865517X / 9781448655175 Trade Paperback Very Good
This book, More Pearls from the Storm, provides additional insights and observations that attempt to clarify profound issues impacting everyone's daily life. The intent of the first portion of the book focuses on both the blessings that have been bestowed upon us as well as the trials and tribulations that occur during our journey through life. The second portion is a collection of rhymes which highlight the more humorous side of life. In both parts of the book most of the tales are only a page or two in length and are written in rhyme for two reasons. The first is to provide a challenge to the author to write an idea in a short and concise manner. The second is to provide the reader with something enjoyable. The book is insightful and uplifting to read and will provide many More Pearls from the Storm.

The Last Buffalo, Bruce Roseland
12 Bruce Roseland The Last Buffalo
Fargo The North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies 2006 0911042644 / 9780911042641 Paperback Very Good
Light shelf wear. The Last Buffalo is my effort to record what has happened to this changing prairie and its effects on my extended family and me. The title, The Last Buffalo, is meant as a metaphor for what I see is a rapidly changing and apparently disappearing way of life. We, the descendants of the prairie settlers, are perhaps like the wild buffalo, unknowing and/or puzzled about the forces that are shaping and changing our environment from the familiar past to an uncertain future. The wild buffalo are gone. We in the central part of South Dakota who are engaged with the land are becoming fewer. The Last Buffalo is a tribute to the people who settled this wonderful and, in many ways beautiful, land that, while having given us bounty, has also extracted a human toll for being settled. I have attempted to write prose, but what I do write seems more strongly to resemble poetry. Most of the poems that I write I consider to be little stories, some based on actual occurrences and others being composites produced from a lot of little stories that I have combined into a single poem that is meant to be a generalization. The book does, I feel, have a beginning that moves toward an end. I have often referred to The Last Buffalo as a book of themed poetry, and I would like to think that someone in the future will be able to say to themselves after reading it, "Oh, so THAT'S how things were then." 14 Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda River Country
San Francisco, CA San Francisco Bay Press 2008 1604610034 / 9781604610031 Paperback Very Good Signed by the Author
River Country captures the setting of Tidewater Virginia, all the way to the Bay, with its well-measured, sonorous words. The author, Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda, was appointed Poet Laureate 2006-2008 for the Commonwealth of Virginia by Governor Timothy M. Kaine. Her poems contain a life list of birds, seen in context, from cardinals fretting at a backyard feeder . . . to the once threatened osprey that 'dives to kill.' Unflinching in her observations and meditations while deeply empathetic with the natural world, Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda writes from an awareness of our human, mostly sorry, impact on land, waters, and creatures, even as she sings every shred of life she sees.

Around the World in Eighty Years: A Collection of Poems, Charles T. Stewart, Jr.
15 Charles T. Stewart, Jr. Around the World in Eighty Years: A Collection of Poems
Lawrenceville, VA Brunswick Publishing Corporation 1556181892 / 9781556181894 Paperback New
Still in the original clear plastic wrapper. Stewart's poetry reveals fascination with nature as personal experience, and with history and culture as collective memory. They are combined with vivid impressions of places and peoples far away and near at hand. His reflections on nature and mankind stress the object of interest, sparing the reader subjective involution. Many poems reflect extended travels to some of the farther corners of the earth; others, a personal commentary on familiar places. The earliest poems, written in hospitals and troopships, are one man's memories of military life in the Second World War.

Poems for Patriarchs: The Verse and Prose of Christian Manhood, Compiled and Edited by Douglas W. Phillips
16 Compiled and Edited by Douglas W. Phillips Poems for Patriarchs: The Verse and Prose of Christian Manhood
San Antonio, TX The Vision Forum 2005 1929241453 / 9781929241453 Hard Cover New New
One reason men lack vision is because they lack poetry in their lives. Men no longer sing or recite inspirational verse. Our boys are no longer required to memorize the great psalms, hymns, and poems of Christian manhood. This should come as no surprise. The 20th century has wreaked havoc upon chivalry and manhood. The transformation of poetry from the ennobling to the coarse, the banal, or the irreverent is as much a sign of our national loss of manhood as it is of the decline of decency and civilization. Poetry is essential to a man's life. We should never forget that God chose to communicate through the language of poetry. A large portion of the Scripture from Psalms to The Song of Solomon -- even the book of Isaiah in the original language -- was written in verse. Why? Because poetry and song allow us to use the beauty of language to paint mental images of victory, of devotion, and of the beauty of life in Jesus Christ. This is why I often begin my speeches or end them with verse. For years, requests for these poems have poured in. Now, in Poems for Patriarchs, I have compiled the most inspirational and vision-communicating selections. The collection includes poems and prose both obscure and popular, but selected because of the profound way they speak to the most important issues in a man's life. They are neither fluffy nor frilly, foppish nor foolish, but virile and often sage, both as to their composition and character. Each chapter in the book contains a generous number of selections, some new, some ancient, but all designed to address the various biblical roles, relationships and seasons in a man's life, from early boyhood to his twilight years. The book begins with the ''Poems of Patriarchy,'' a section designed to inspire men to think in terms of sacrifice, certitude, and vision. In ''Poems of Boyhood,'' the memories of childhood and glories of being a boy are joyfully proclaimed. ''Poems of Sonship'' is dedicated to the meaning of honor between father and son. ''Poems of the Groom'' focuses on a man's love for his wife and the Lord's love for his bride, the Church. ''Poems of Fatherhood,'' includes my favorite poems that remind me of the ''big picture'' and the glory of raising up sons and daughters for the Lord. Many fathers will especially love ''Poems for the Children's Hour'' and ''Poems of Heroism'' because they include some of the very best ''daddy read-aloud'' poems. A Sampling of Included Poems: - The Patriarch - The Pilgrim Vision of William Bradford - The Hymn of Boyhood - Woodman Spare That Tree - The Letter of Sullivan Ballou - King Alfred's War Song - We Few, We Band of Brothers - The Children's Hour

Glimpses of Biblical Women and Other Poems, Dorothy J Mosher
21 Dorothy J Mosher Glimpses of Biblical Women and Other Poems
Nashville, TN Westview Publishing 2004 0975564617 / 9780975564615 Trade Paperback Very Good
Glimpses of Biblical Women and Other Poems is a collection of insights and poems about women found in the scriptures. Each study takes the form of an introduction, a poem, and summarizing thoughts to consider. It is a stimulating study guide that will bring new dimensions to your Bible study group, fellowship or prayer group, in your private devotions, or even as a basis for a biblically based retreat. "In the patriarchal world of the Old and New Testament communities of faith we find a great variety of divine and human expectations for women. The poetry of Dorothy J. Mosher opens up these worlds for her readers in all their splendid diversity and humanity. By focusing primarily on women whose stories are barely glimpsed, we are invited by each poem to use our senses and intuition to read and live between the lines of these amazingly plentiful stories. One story poem leads to another. Mosher's insight and scholarship encourage her readers to open the Bible for more. Using the poetic form, this collection bears evidence of thorough exegesis and biblical study. We as readers stand to learn more about the Christian scriptures and the human worlds through which they have come."

The Complete Poems Edgar Allan Poe, Edgar Allan Poe
24 Edgar Allan Poe The Complete Poems Edgar Allan Poe
New York Barnes & Noble 1999 1566194407 / 9781566194402 Cloth New Used As New
Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) is internationally renowned as a pioneering master of the macabre. He is regarded as one of the world's great short story writers as well as a great lyric poet, and is credited with inventing the detective story and the modern gothic horror tale. He has been an important influence on many major American and European writers including William Faulkner, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Baudelaire, H.P. Lovecraft, and William Butler Yeats, among many others. Poe's poetry, which is collected in this volume, is more personal than his prose. The themes of love, death, and despair which recur throughout reflect the anguish he suffered in his own troubled life. "Annabel Lee" is a haunting lament to his young wife, Virginia, who died of tuberculosis. "The Bells" is an eerie and melancholy meditation which recreates with brilliant musical language the hypnotic, funereal aura of ringing bells. "The Raven" is a comic tour de force in which the protagonist turns his strange visitor into a symbol of his own sorrow and loss. Poe's best poems remain some of the most popular and technically accomplished in the English language. This book features a deluxe cover, ribbon marker, top stain, and decorative endpaper with a name plate.

Minneapolis, MN Fortress Press 2003 0800634608 / 9780800634605 Paperback Very Good
This thoughtful collection of prayers emerged from Brueggemann’s thirty-five years of teaching in seminaries. Full of reflection, faith, and dialogue, they reveal another side of this gifted author from what his many readers are accustomed to. These deeply felt and sparklingly articulated prayers reflect a wide range of life experiences. As readers, we are taken from the depths of pain and loss to the heights of joy and praise. The author takes on life in its fullest as he utters his praise and lament, petition and thanksgiving. Brueggemann’s prayers lead us to deeper commitment, deeper faith, and deeper reflection. The volume also includes an index of biblical allusions that will be useful for preachers as well as the general reader looking for the biblical roots of these fears, hopes, struggles, and aspirations.

30 Emily Dickinson Emily Dickinson: Collected Poems
New York, NY Barnes & Noble 1993 1566190304 / 9781566190305 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
Emily Dickinson was a prolific writer and yet, with the exception of four poems in a limited regional volume, her poems were never published during her lifetime. It was indeed fortunate that her sister discovered the poems—all loosely bound in bundles—shortly after Dickinson died. Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson is the complete collection of the first three volumes of poetry published posthumously in 1890, 1891, and 1896 by editors Mary Loomis Todd and Thomas Wentworth Higginson. The volumes were all received with high acclaim and contain some of her best-known poems. It was in the twentieth century, however, that Dickinson was finally recognized as one of the great poets and, without dispute, the most popular. The name Emily Dickinson is a legend now, but she never had the opportunity to taste the wine of success and fame in her lifetime. In fact, if there was any legendary status she received in her life, it was not for poetry but for the way she lived her life. She received local notoriety in her native town of Amherst, Massachusetts, as an eccentric recluse who, with few exceptions, would never set foot outside her house. Yet, as her poetry will attest, she had a keen insight of life, love, nature, and death and seemed to be content with her station in life. Reading through the poems in Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson, you will see that she was indeed a woman of independence and spirit, a poet that lives today in our hearts and minds.

Organized topically into sixteen parts, this collection features the subjects Helen returned to again and again in her life--from musings on heaven and the beauty in nature to odes of love for friends and family. It's a definitive volume packed with heart and hope for generations to come.

The Latest Monument, Jay Paul
41 Jay Paul The Latest Monument
Cincinnati, OR David Robert Books 2014 1625490992 / 9781625490995 Paperback Very Good
Arranged in five sections, the poems of Jay Paul's THE LATEST MONUMENT begin in enigma--bucolic night sounds, fearful wails of a neighborhood fire whistle, the taunting of older children, the throbbing of a fire hose. Adulthood seems to come as a surprise, and with it deaths-forebears', a beloved friend's, beloved elders', a ruby-crowned kinglet's. The collection continues through a series of love poems--love and aging, really. And then, in the section "Call It Embrace," poems of forbearance: a couple locked together due to infirmity, an elderly former wartime nurse for whom even locomotives must stop. If the early poems seem self-focused, nearly all of these later ones celebrate "effort expended." The poem that gives the book its title watches the creation of pencil portrait of a young child whose life must stand in, to an extent, for the older sister who has not survived. Yet the book ends in arrivals. There is often the touching of water, and an accompanying feeling of benediction-the sense of being welcomed into a sense of being more profound than any individual self, something Given by Other Years." You'll find plenty of rhyming, but also a more relaxed voice given to sentences that roll through many phrases to their fulfillment.

The Universe Proclaims Thy Praise: Devotions in Poetry and Prose, Joanne Midkiff Cole
42 Joanne Midkiff Cole The Universe Proclaims Thy Praise: Devotions in Poetry and Prose
Huntington, WV Mid-Atlantic Highlands 2011 0983394741 / 9780983394747 Trade Paperback Very Good Signed by the Author
The journey was long and the desert dry and hot. As time passed, the water in the brass vessel became putrid and unfit to drink. The costly porcelain container broke from the sun's heat, and the water was lost. The simple, inexpensive pottery, however, kept the water cool and sweet the entire journey. So it is with Christians: we are only simple containers, simple tools in God's hands. We can always be filled with the cool refreshing love of God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which can be dispensed from us to all with whom we come in contact. God's love is soothing, healing, and the answer to all problems, whether in this life or life hereafter. This touching devotional blends prose and poetry to take the reader through a pilgrimage of seasons, starting in winter. There is much wisdom, health, and solace here for parts that need healing.

The definition of poetry is the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts. To me poetry is much more; it's the expression of life. It relates feelings, it paints pictures, and it says who you are. Most poets, including myself, draw upon life to write poetry. I served 23 years in the U.S. Navy. After retiring from the Navy I spent another 20 years in the work force. I currently teach at a local college. Other than family and friends the most important thing in my life is writing. The poems in this book reflect life. It tells of love both past and present. It relates happiness and sadness. The poems in this book are poems of LIFE.

Beloved, Come Closer: Devotions with Poetry written by Lois Meyer, Loin Meyer
50 Loin Meyer Beloved, Come Closer: Devotions with Poetry written by Lois Meyer
Xulon Press 2008 1604773049 / 9781604773040 Trade Paperback Very Good Signed by Author
This book is designed to be used as a devotional to stimulate spiritual growth. It will demonstrate how scriptures can be used in our daily walk with God and acquaint the reader with more scriptures. It can also be just relaxing reading after a busy day. For the person who is seeking to know the Lord better, this book will be a great inspiration. The poems will refresh your spirit and bring you closer to God. Lois Meyer became a Christian at the age of twelve and has served the Lord since that time. Her Mother was an inspiration for her to get involved with becoming a Director of Christian Education. Lois is a graduate of Rhema Bible Training Center and Victory World Missions Training Center, both in Tulsa, Oklahoma. An ordained minister of the gospel, she became a foreign missionary to 19 countries at the age of 67. She returned to eight of them to teach again in the Bible schools and preach in the local churches. She is a firm believer in the miracle power of Jesus today and often recounts miracles on the mission field and in her personal life to confirm it. Her goal is to help others understand, by the scriptures, how to live a sin-free, joyful, peaceful, productive life in Christ. This book will help to fulfill that purpose.

Carnivorous Boy Carnivorous Bird: Poetry From Poland (A Bilingual Edition), Marcin Baran, Anna Skucinska and Elzbieta Wojcik-Leese
53 Marcin Baran, Anna Skucinska and Elzbieta Wojcik-Leese Carnivorous Boy Carnivorous Bird: Poetry From Poland (A Bilingual Edition)
Brookline, MA Zephyr Press 2004 0939010720 / 9780939010721 Trade Paperback Very Good
Since the lyric beginnings of Polish poetry, writers have been burdened with duties typically delegated to politicians, soldiers, priests, or journalists. The political, social, and cultural changes of the last decade have allowed Polish poets to cast off these burdens, and focus instead on individual expression and varied aesthetic movements. Carnivorous Boy Carnivorous Bird focuses on the core group of this movement—poets born between 1958 and 1969. ". . . in a constant confusion of mystification and authenticity, distance and directness, representational skepticism and mimetic euphoria, game-playing and honesty, the poets presented here perform their informal, singular duties towards language and the human condition."—from the introduction by Marcin Baran

Icon and Evidence (Poems), Margaret Gibson
54 Margaret Gibson Icon and Evidence (Poems)
Baton Rouge, LA Louisiana State University Press 2001 0807127108 / 9780807127100 Trade Paperback Good Signed by Author
With ICON AND EVIDENCE, Margaret Gibson gives us poems grounded in reverence and inquiry and sensuous delight. She extends and enriches the lyric poems, finding it capacious and durable enough to embrace short and longer meditations, epistles, persona poems, and narratives. Whether their concerns are intimate, spiritual, or social, these are poems of atonement essentially faithful to experience and its revelations, more so than to any specific creed or doctrine. The task to be faithful is both aesthetic and spiritual; to use words faithfully is how Gibson clarifies her encounters with the Absolute within the relative and mutable things of this world.

Holy Spirit Inspirations, Vol. 1, Pamela Shaw
58 Pamela Shaw Holy Spirit Inspirations, Vol. 1
Pittsburgh, PA Dorrance Publishing 2005 0805968571 / 9780805968576 Paperback New
Having been inspired by the movie, The Passion of Christ, poetess Pamela J. Shaw fulfilled her lifelong dream of writing a book of religious poetry as a testimony to her deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ. She feels her life has been blessed in many ways, seen and unseen, by the presence and mercy of the Lord and it is with this in mind she found herself penning the poems contained in Holy Spirit Inspirations, Volume I, in short order. She hopes her words will offer hope, comfort, faith, and inspiration to others, particularly those who have not developed a personal relationship with Christ or who are faltering in their walk. Her words joyfully express Christ’s constant presence in our lives, even when we may doubt that He hears us, and if we just go to Him in faith and lay our troubles in His hands, He will provide guidance and solutions. And for those who already know God’s mercy and loving kindness in their lives, she urges them to share that with others and spread the Good News of the Gospel. Heartfelt, evocative, personal and yet universal, Pamela J. Shaw’s words not only fulfill her dream, but will encourage others to turn to God to fulfill their dreams and aspirations as well.
