Handbook of Nature Study, Anna Botsford Comstock
6 Anna Botsford Comstock Handbook of Nature Study
Ithaca Cornell Paperbacks 1986 0801493846 / 9780801493843 Paperback Very Good
A matchless handbook for decades, this classic work has been the natural history bible for countless teachers and others who seek information about their environment. Written originally for those elementary school teachers who knew little of common plants and animals, and even less about the earth beneath their feet and the skies overhead, this book is for the most part as valid and helpful today as it was when first written in 1911―and revised in the spirit of its authors by a group of naturalists in 1939. After all, dandelions, toads, robins, and constellations have changed little since then! And modern society's concern with the quality of life and the impact of people on soil, water, and wildlife makes this book even more relevant. Nature-study, as used in this handbook, encompasses all living things except humans, as well as all nonliving things such as rocks and minerals, the heavens, and weather. Of the living things described, most are common in the northeastern states, and many, such as the dandelion, milkweed, and mullein, and the house mouse, muskrat, and red fox, are so widespread that people living outside the United States will recognize them easily. Anna Botsford Comstock very appropriately took the view that we should know first and best the things closest to us. Only then, when we have an intimate knowledge of our neighbors, should we, journey farther afield to learn about more distant things. Teachers and children will find the material in this book invaluable in that regard. Details of the most common, but in some ways the most interesting, things are brought out, first by careful, nontechnical descriptions of the things themselves and later by thoughtful questions and study units. Because the most common things are treated in greatest detail, materials for study are easy to find. Whether the reader lives in the inner city or in the rural outback, the handbook is a treasure trove of information. A teacher does not need to know much about nature to use this handbook. The information is there for the novice and the expert alike. All that is needed is an inquiring mind, senses to observe, and a willingness to think about nature on a personal level. To enter this book in search of information about any common organism, stone, or object in the sky is to open the door to a fresh and lively acquaintance with one's environment.

Making the Best of Basics: Family Preparedness Handbook, James Talmage Stevens

Salt Lake City, UT Gold Leaf Press 1997 1882723252 / 9781882723256 Paperback Good
Sturdy. Light wear/creasing on book/cover. No interior markings. Close your eyes for a moment and imagine what would happen if you became ill and couldn't work, or if an earthquake or hurricane or bomb left your community devastated. It happens all the time. When unexpected disasters happen, people who are even a little prepared are much better off than those who have taken their dependence on outside resources for granted. When you imagine the security of not having to worry about going to the store for even a few weeks, a comprehensive storage system begins to make sense. Now in its 11th edition, is one of the best-known preparedness bibles around. Stevens lays out a yearlong storage program of 15 food and nonfood categories, six of which (water, wheat and grains, dairy products, sweeteners, "cooking catalysts" like salt and oil, and sprouting seeds) are capable of sustaining life indefinitely in a no-frills diet. The other 9 categories are designated "Building Blocks," and improve upon the basic diet and support a more routine, less Spartan existence while relying on stored supplies

Profitable Organic Farming, Jon Newton
22 Jon Newton Profitable Organic Farming
Cambridge, MA Blackwell Science 1995 0632039299 / 9780632039296 Trade Paperback Good
There is a crease on the bottom corner of the back cover. Sturdy. No underlines. Forecasters had already predicted that organic farming will double its production in five years, but now the Government has promised to support it financially. The effect of such government support in Germany has been dramatic, leading to a fourfold increase in the number of organic farms and a sevenfold increase in land area. A similar rate of growth could occur in the UK where many farmers dislike set-aside farming, and organic farming provides a better alternative. Although a growing public demand for organic products is assured, the main problem of how to make it pay remains. This book identifies the key points for success, and draws on the experience and knowledge of farmers who have turned organic farming into a thriving commercial enterprise.

Blodgett, OR Norton Creek Press 2008 097217706X / 9780972177061 Paperback Very Good
Clean and sturdy. No markings. The title page has a surface tear that doesn't fully penetrate the page. Fresh Air or Bust! To stay healthy, your chickens need plenty of ventilation—probably more than they’re getting today. This was discovered over 100 years ago, but has been largely forgotten. Today’s small-flock housing tends to be dank, dark, and smelly. Chickens, like miners’ canaries, are easily harmed by poor air quality. Wet litter breeds disease. Darkness forces chickens, like parrots, to be artificially inactive. “Dank, dark, and smelly” is a deadly combination! Closed chicken houses are so harmful that knocking out a wall can cause an immediate improvement, even in winter. Chickens, after all, have a thick coat of feathers to keep them warm, but are vulnerable to poor air quality and pathogens in the litter; and their unwillingness to eat in the dark means they can starve in the midst of plenty. Fresh-Air Poultry Houses was written by Dr. Prince T. Woods, a noted poultry health expert. Dr. Woods describes not only his own poultry houses, but those of many of his clients, giving the book a breadth of experience that makes it a unique resource. This 1924 book is old-fashioned and a little eccentric, but in a good way. Fresh-Air Poultry Houses is a good example of the Norton Creek Press motto: “Most of the best books are out of print and forgotten, but we can fix that!”
