The Grolier Library of Science Biographies - 10 Volume set
8 The Grolier Library of Science Biographies - 10 Volume set
Danbury, CT Grolier Educational 1997 0717276260 / 9780717276264 Hard Cover Very Good Ex-Library
Great shape. Clean and sturdy. Has typical library stamps. Grade 9 Up. Featuring 2000 men and women from ancient times to the present, this well-researched work imparts biographical information about renowned scientists such as Nils Bohr, Marie Curie, Sigmund Freud, Jane Goodall, Antoine Lavoisier, and Dmitri Mendeleev. There is marked emphasis on individuals working in the "traditional pure sciences"?chemistry, biology, physics, astronomy, and the Earth sciences?and a solid selection of notables in the fields of engineering and technology. However, coverage of pioneers in medicine, mathematics, anthropology, philosophy, and psychology is more limited. The alphabetically arranged, partial to double-page entries include a serviceable portrait (where available). Dry, uninspired text investigates the subjects' education, training, career milestones, and the content and importance of their contributions. These achievements are explained in technical jargon that requires background knowledge of the topic to comprehend the material. The glossaries do little to elucidate these challenging concepts as scientific terms are also defined in a complex, unapproachable manner. The articles contain constant references to the work and theories of other researchers with whom lay students will not be familiar. Unfortunately, there are no details about the pioneers' inspirations. Each volume contains a solid list for further research and a comprehensive index of the entire set, which groups the scientists by country and field. Peggy Saari and Stephen Allison's Scientists (UXL, 1996) is a meticulously structured, user-friendly tool that showcases 150 lively biographical pieces. Although the scope is not as wide, the world of science is presented in a fashion that is accessible and appealing to general audiences.?Hillary Jan Donitz-Goldstein, New York Public Library Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The Narnian: The Life and Imagination of C. S. Lewis, Alan Jacobs
16 Alan Jacobs The Narnian: The Life and Imagination of C. S. Lewis
San Francisco, CA Harper San Francisco 2006 0060872691 / 9780060872694 Trade Paperback Fine
A journey into the imaginative life of C.S. Lewis exploring the themes and life events that allowed an Oxford don, a scholar of medieval literature who loved to debate philosophy at his local pub, to write one of the most enduring classics of children's literature. C.S. Lewis was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably the most influential Christian writer of his day. Yet among his poetry, literary history and criticism, novels and Christian apologetics stands a unique, delightfully imaginative children's series called The Chronicles of Narnia, which have become enduring classics. Alan Jacobs takes this imaginary world of Narnia, that has captivated children and adults alike for years, and uses the themes and stories found within to explore the imaginative life of C.S. Lewis. Few things are more interesting to human beings than trying to figure out how another human being (espeically a profoundly gifted one) works. Not just a conventional, straightforward biography of Lewis, Jacobs instead seeks a more elusive quarry: an understanding of the way Lewis' experiences, both direct and literary, formed themselves into patterns–themes that then shaped his thought and writings, especially the stories of Narnia. It is in the Narnia stories that we see the most of Lewis, and this illuminating biography delivers a true picture of the life and imagination of the Narnian.

18 Alane M. Halene JR. With Erine Keeley Marshall The Hope Of Heaven: God's Eight Messages Of Assurance To A Grieving Father
Santa Rosa, California Thomas Nelson 2015 071802205X / 9780718022051 Hard Cover New New
Sometimes, when the worst becomes reality, God turns theoretical musing into heavenly experience. Al Hallene discovered his college-student son’s body after Alex hanged himself. While Al waited for the authorities to arrive, he had ten minutes alone with his son. During that wrenching time, God gave Al eight visions of heaven, where the father and son would someday reunite. As Al recounts those heartening and healing moments, readers are reminded of the affirming hope that Christians share even while asking the real questions tragedy raises: Will we see our lost loved ones again? Does God care about our pain? What does this mean for us now? The Hope of Heaven is a very different kind of heaven book: rather than an argument for the existence of heaven or an account of an out-of-body experience, Alan Hallene gives readers a glimpse of life beyond the tragedies we endure.

In June 1994 Alvah Simon and his wife, Diana, set off in their 36-foot sailboat, the Roger Henry, to explore the hauntingly beautiful world of icebergs, tundra, and fjords lying within one of the Earth's most remote regions -- the Arctic Circle. North to the Night recounts this remarkable, death-defying voyage, which proved to be as much a spiritual journey as an oceanic one.Despite the careful preparation and ingenuity that had seen the Simons through a series of ordeals four months into their journey, Alvah and Diana found themselves trapped in Tay Bay, 100 miles from the nearest settlement. When Diana's father then fell terminally ill, she made the wrenching choice to be with him in New Zealand, boarding the last rescue helicopter of the season and leaving Alvah to survive the long polar night alone with his cat, Halifax.Faced with screaming blizzards, perpetual darkness, and aching loneliness, Alvah learned that more dangerous than the beasts prowling outside the boat were the demons within. Forced to confront the awakening of his spiritual self, he emerged five months later a transformed man.

Ivan the Terrible (Profiles in Power), Andrei Pavlov & Maureen Perrie
36 Andrei Pavlov & Maureen Perrie Ivan the Terrible (Profiles in Power)
London Pearson 1988 058209948x / 9780582099487 Paperback Very Good
Light wear. No underlines. This is the first major re-assessment of Ivan the Terrible to be published in the West in the post-Soviet period. It breaks away from older stereotypes of the tsar – whether as ‘crazed tyrant’ and ‘evil genius’, on the one hand, or as a ‘great and wise statesman’, on the other – to provide a more balanced picture. It examines the ways in which Ivan’s policies contributed to the creation of Russia’s distinctive system of unlimited monarchical rule. Ivan is best remembered for his reign of terror, the book pays due attention to the horrors of his executions, tortures and repressions, especially in the period of the oprichnina (1565-72), when he mysteriously divided his realm into two parts, one of which was under the direct control of the tsar and his oprichniki (bodyguard). This work argues that the often gruesome forms assumed by the terror reflected not only Ivan’s personal cruelty and sadism, but also his religious views about the divinely ordained right of the tsar to punish his treasonous subjects, just as sinners were punished in Hell. Primarily chronological in its organisation, the book focuses on three main aspects of Ivan’s power: the territorial expansion of the state, the mythology, rituals and symbols of monarchy; and the development of the autocratic system of rule.

37 Andrew T. Le Peau and Linda Doll Heart. Soul. Mind. Strength: An Anecdotal History of InterVarsity Press, 1947-2007
Downers Grove, IL InterVarsity Press 2006 0830833692 / 9780830833696 Trade Paperback Very Good
"Some publishers tell you what to believe. Other publishers tell you what you already believe. But InterVarsity Press helps you believe," says J. I. Packer. As an extension of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA, InterVarsity Press serves those in the university, the church and the world by publishing resources that equip and encourage people to follow Jesus as Savior and Lord in all of life. The history of twentieth-century evangelicalism cannot be understood apart from the authors and books that shaped it. Leading figures like apologist Francis Schaeffer, theologian J.I. Packer and pastor-scholar John Stott helped a generation of church leaders to think more biblically. Landmark books such as Ron Sider's Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger and James W. Sire's The Universe Next Door challenged Christians to engage the world around them. For many who took their Christianity seriously, the authoritative voice of evangelical Christianity came through one influential book publisher--InterVarsity Press. Andy Le Peau and Linda Doll provide an anecdotal history of InterVarsity Press, from its origins as the literature division of a campus ministry to its place as a prominent evangelical publishing house. Chronicled here are the stories, people and events that made IVP what it is today. Recording good times and bad, celebrations and challenges alike, they place IVP in its historical context and demonstrate its contribution to modern evangelical Christianity. Distinctive as a leading publisher of thoughtful Christian books, IVP stands as a model of holistic, integrative Christianity for the whole person--heart, soul, mind and strength.

God's Fugitive: The Life of C. M. Doughty, Andrew Taylor
38 Andrew Taylor God's Fugitive: The Life of C. M. Doughty
New York Dorset Press 2001 0760720177 / 9780760720172 Trade Paperback Good
Explorer, scholar, travel writer and poet, Charles Doughty was the progenitor of a noble tradition that includes Lawrence of Arabia (to whom he was a mentor) and Wilfred Thesiger: British writers who have been fascinated by the Bedouin, and in particular by that strange, mythic part of the world, the Empty Quarter (a phrase which Doughty introduced to the West). In the 1870s Doughty spent two years wandering through Arabia, first with the Haj pilgrimage, then joining nomadic bands of Arabs, sometimes staying as a virtual prisoner in far-flung desert towns. Unyielding in his independence of mind, the tall, red-bearded Doughty's aggressive refusal to conceal his Christianity made his travels all the more dangerous: he was threatened with death several times, spurned, insulted and often beaten by angry mobs. The story of his archaeological investigations and his wide-ranging observations of Arabia and desert life were published in 1888 as the famous Arabia Deserta, with its haunting opening sentence "A new voice hailed me of an old friend when, first returned from the Peninsula, I paced again in that long street of Damascus that is called straight." Feted by the literary establishment, Doughty risked all many times over in his obsesssive quests in Arabia. He often seemed possessed by an almost messianic vision of himself and found among the Bedouin a chivalry and honour that suited his temperament, as it did Thesiger's. Often, too, he found himself at odds with the authorities, his work and his genius, as he saw it, neglected. His long, impassioned and often paradoxical life makes him one of the great British scholar-eccentrics.

An Artist in Treason: The Extraordinary Double Life of General James Wilkinson (Advance Reading Copy), Andro Linklater
39 Andro Linklater An Artist in Treason: The Extraordinary Double Life of General James Wilkinson (Advance Reading Copy)
New York Walker & Company 2009 0802717209 / 9780802717207 Trade Paperback Very Good
The first modern biography of the greatest traitor—and one of the most colorful characters—in American history. Patriot, traitor, general, spy: James Wilkinson was a consummate contradiction. Brilliant and precocious, at age twenty he was both the youngest general in the revolutionary Continental Army, and privy to the Conway cabal to oust Washington from command. He was Benedict Arnold’s aide, but the first to reveal Arnold’s infamous treachery. By thirty-eight, he was the senior general in the United States army—and had turned traitor himself. Wilkinson’s audacious career as Agent 13 in the Spanish secret service while in command of American forces is all the more remarkable because it was anything but hidden. Though he betrayed America’s strategic secrets, sought to keep the new country from expanding beyond the Mississippi, and almost delivered Lewis and Clark’s expedition into Spanish hands, four presidents—Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Madison—turned a blind eye to his treachery. They gambled that Wilkinson—by turns charming and ruthless—would never betray the army itself and use it to overthrow our nascent democracy—a fate every other democracy in the Western hemisphere endured. The crucial test came in 1806, when at the last minute Wilkinson turned the army against Aaron Burr and foiled his conspiracy to break up the U nion. A superb writer and superlative storyteller, Andro Linklater captures with brio Wilkinson’s charismatic ability to live a double life in public view. His saga shows, more clearly than any other, how fragile the young republic was and how its strength grew from the risks its leaders faced and the challenges they had to overcome.

Light scuff-wear on bottom cover edge. The diary as Anne Frank wrote it. At last, in a new translation, this definitive edition contains entries about Anne's burgeoning sexuality and confrontations with her mother that were cut from previous editions. Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl is among the most enduring documents of the twentieth century. Since its publication in 1947, it has been a beloved and deeply admired monument to the indestructible nature of the human spirit, read by millions of people and translated into more than fifty-five languages. Doubleday, which published the first English translation of the diary in 1952, now offers a new translation that captures Anne's youthful spirit and restores the original material omitted by Anne's father, Otto -- approximately thirty percent of the diary. The elder Frank excised details about Anne's emerging sexuality, and about the often-stormy relations between Anne and her mother. Anne Frank and her family, fleeing the horrors of Nazi occupation forces, hid in the back of an Amsterdam office building for two years. This is Anne's record of that time. She was thirteen when the family went into the "Secret Annex," and in these pages, she grows to be a young woman and proves to be an insightful observer of human nature as well. A timeless story discovered by each new generation, The Diary of a Young Girl stands without peer. For young readers and adults, it continues to bring to life this young woman, who for a time survived the worst horrors the modern world had seen -- and who remained triumphantly and heartbreakingly human throughout her ordeal.

51 Ariel Sharon Warrior: The Autobiography of Ariel Sharon
New York A Touchstone Book 1990 0671705938 / 9780671705930 Trade Paperback Good
Shows light wear. Israel's newest prime minister as of February 6, 2001, Ariel Sharon is a dynamic and controversial leader. A hero in Israel's wars, perhaps the most daring and successful commander in Israel's extraordinary military history, Sharon has always been a warrior, whether the enemies were hostile Arab nations, terrorists, Time magazine, or rival politicians. The public man is well known -- aggressive in battle, hard-line in politics -- but the private man has always been obscured by Sharon's dazzling career and powerful personality. In this compelling and dramatic auto-biography, the real Sharon appears for the first time: a complex man, a loving father, a figure of courage and compassion. He is a warrior who commands the respect and love of his troops, a visionary, and an uncompromising, ruthless pragmatist. Sharon tells his story with frankness, power, intelligence, and a brilliant gift for detail. Always controversial, he is as outspoken as his friends -- and enemies -- would expect him to be.

A Matter of Survival: The Story of Frances, Arleen Patricia Mercorella
52 Arleen Patricia Mercorella A Matter of Survival: The Story of Frances
Leland, NC Springtime Press 2014 0615993605 / 9780615993607 Paperback Very Good Signed by the Author
From the time Frances was born, the odds were stacked against her. She was born to Italian immigrants in 1917; her father resented her for being a girl, and her mother resented her for being born at all. And when a rift in the family left the girl and her mother alone and penniless, things managed to get even worse: she was taken away to an orphanage, left in the care of stern nuns who never offered the hysterically crying six-year-old an ounce of comfort. But the same girl who spent her formative years facing feelings of abandonment and isolation managed to grow into a woman full of positivity and gratitude, overcoming astounding obstacles and never showing a hint of bitterness. This inspiring true story documents the incredible life of Frances, and how she has faced each instance of adversity and prejudice in her life armed with sweetness and grace. Written candidly and affectionately by Frances’s daughter, Arleen Mercorella, A Matter of Survival is a testament to the ability to overcome life’s challenges—a true inspiration for those facing hardships of any type in their lives.

The Cross: 38,102 Mile 38 Years 1 Mission - Special TBN Edition, Arthur Blessitt
58 Arthur Blessitt The Cross: 38,102 Mile 38 Years 1 Mission - Special TBN Edition
Colorado Springs, CO Authentic 2008 Paperback New
On May 17, 2008, Arthur Blessitt walked his 38,102nd mile in Zanzibar, off of the coast of Tanzania, completing a journey that began in 1969. Arthur started walking with a twelve-foot cross on December 25, 1969 and has successfully carried a large wooden cross into every nation and major island group of the world. This book reads like a travelogue as you journey with Arthur in country after country. You’ll begin with Arthur’s initial call from God to carry a cross from Hollywood, where he was known as "the minister of Sunset Strip," across America to its capital, Washington, DC. You’ll go with Arthur as he hacks his way through the Darien Jungle from Panama to Colombia. You’ll join Arthur and his son, Joshua, as they take the cross to South Africa in 1986. You’ll be moved by the stories of how God used them to bring people spiritual, physical and relational healing during the final tumultuous days of racial apartheid. You’ll trek with Arthur and his wife, Denise, as they cross desert sands to take the cross to Saudi Arabia when the nation was closed to tourists and as they walk with the cross in the various regions of the former USSR just weeks after its collapse. As Arthur has traveled around the world, he has found the cross to be a universal symbol of God’s love that can be understood in spite of language and cultural barriers. He writes, "Perhaps I’m the only person in history who has been physically shaped by the weight of a cross. But the changes the cross has brought to my physical body are not important. What is important is how the cross has changed my life and the lives of so many others, from the inside out!"
