Medieval Memories: Men, Women and the Past, 700 - 1300 (Women and Men in History Series)
3 Medieval Memories: Men, Women and the Past, 700 - 1300 (Women and Men in History Series)
London Pearson, Education 2001 0582369029 / 9780582369023 Paperback Very Good
Who, exactly, was responsible for the preservation of knowledge about the past? How did people preserve their recollections and pass them on to the next generation? Did they write them down or did they hand then on orally? The book is concerned with the memories of medieval people. In the Middle Ages, as now, men and women collected stories about the past and handed them down to posterity. Many memories centre in the aristocratic family or lineage while others are focussed on institutions such as monasteries or nunneries. The family and monastic contexts clearly illustrate that remembrance of the past was a task for men and women and that each sex had a specific gendered role. Memory also involves selection of what should and should not be remembered and its corollary, amnesia, therefore, is discussed. Anchored in the present, memory casts a shadow on the future and thus prophecies form an important component of the cult of remembrance. For the first time in Medieval Memories, tombstones, medieval encyclopaedias and legal testimonies figure alongside moral guidebooks, miracle stories and chronicles as material for the gendered perceptions of the medieval past.

The Grolier Library of Science Biographies - 10 Volume set
6 The Grolier Library of Science Biographies - 10 Volume set
Danbury, CT Grolier Educational 1997 0717276260 / 9780717276264 Hard Cover Very Good Ex-Library
Great shape. Clean and sturdy. Has typical library stamps. Grade 9 Up. Featuring 2000 men and women from ancient times to the present, this well-researched work imparts biographical information about renowned scientists such as Nils Bohr, Marie Curie, Sigmund Freud, Jane Goodall, Antoine Lavoisier, and Dmitri Mendeleev. There is marked emphasis on individuals working in the "traditional pure sciences"?chemistry, biology, physics, astronomy, and the Earth sciences?and a solid selection of notables in the fields of engineering and technology. However, coverage of pioneers in medicine, mathematics, anthropology, philosophy, and psychology is more limited. The alphabetically arranged, partial to double-page entries include a serviceable portrait (where available). Dry, uninspired text investigates the subjects' education, training, career milestones, and the content and importance of their contributions. These achievements are explained in technical jargon that requires background knowledge of the topic to comprehend the material. The glossaries do little to elucidate these challenging concepts as scientific terms are also defined in a complex, unapproachable manner. The articles contain constant references to the work and theories of other researchers with whom lay students will not be familiar. Unfortunately, there are no details about the pioneers' inspirations. Each volume contains a solid list for further research and a comprehensive index of the entire set, which groups the scientists by country and field. Peggy Saari and Stephen Allison's Scientists (UXL, 1996) is a meticulously structured, user-friendly tool that showcases 150 lively biographical pieces. Although the scope is not as wide, the world of science is presented in a fashion that is accessible and appealing to general audiences.?Hillary Jan Donitz-Goldstein, New York Public Library Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The REAL Benghazi Story: What the White House and Hillary Don't Want You to Know, Aaron Klein
13 Aaron Klein The REAL Benghazi Story: What the White House and Hillary Don't Want You to Know
Washington, D.C. WND Books 2014 1936488868 / 9781936488865 Hard Cover New New
Bigger than Watergate! Bigger than Iran-Contra! Ten times bigger than both, said one representative. The Bengahzi scandal may have been covered up by the White House, but the truth is about to come out. The Real Benghazi Story is a ground-breaking investigative work that finally exposes some of the most significant issues related to the murderous September 11, 2012, attack-information with current national security implications. Investigative journalist and New York Times best-selling author Aaron Klein provides the answers many have longed for from the secretive activities transpiring inside the doomed facility to shocking new details about the withholding of critical protection at the U.S. special mission. Learn about what really happened to Ambassador Chris Stevens that fated night, the central role Hillary Clinton actually played in the scandal, and more! Also answered for the first time is why the State Department hired armed members of the al-Qaeda-linked February 17 Martyrs Brigade to protect the facility. New reasons are revealed for not sending air support or Special Forces during the assault, while extensively probing not only jihadist groups but also possible state actors behind the attack. These are just some of the new details to be revealed in this game-changing book.

A Faithful Sea: The Religious Cultures of the Mediterranean, 1200-1700, Adnan A. Husain and K. E. Fleming
14 Adnan A. Husain and K. E. Fleming A Faithful Sea: The Religious Cultures of the Mediterranean, 1200-1700
Oxford One World 2007 1851684964 / 9781851684960 Paperback Very Good
Contemporary academia relies upon categorization. One can study Africa or Europe; East or West; the Middle Ages or the Early Modern period. In this innovative collection of essays, the Mediterranean is taken as a whole. The birthplace of the three principal monotheistic religions, it is shown to be a distinct cultural space characterized by hybridity, diversity, and cultural dynamism. Distinctive both in scope and approach, A Faithful Sea is insistent that regional history is far more than a mere aggregate of various national histories. Addressing a wide array of Mediterranean religious tradition and identity in the Medieval and Early Modern Periods, the essays unite in highlighting the cross-fertilization of people and society within the region. With contributions from leading specialists on Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, readers from all backgrounds will find the concept of "Mediterraneity" both original and powerful.

London Yale Notsa Bene 2000 0300089023 / 9780300089028 Trade Paperback Very Good
Shrouding themselves and their aims in deepest secrecy, the leaders of the Taliban movement control Afghanistan with an inflexible, crushing fundamentalism. The most extreme and radical of all Islamic organizations, the Taliban inspires fascination, controversy, and especially fear in both the Muslim world and the West. Correspondent Ahmed Rashid brings the shadowy world of the Taliban into sharp focus in this enormously interesting and revealing book. It is the only authoritative account of the Taliban and modern day Afghanistan available to English language readers. Based on his experiences as a journalist covering the civil war in Afghanistan for twenty years, traveling and living with the Taliban, and interviewing most of the Taliban leaders since their emergence to power in 1994, Rashid offers unparalleled firsthand information. He explains how the growth of Taliban power has already created severe instability in Russia, Iran, Pakistan, and five Central Asian republics. He describes the Taliban’s role as a major player in a new “Great Game”—a competition among Western countries and companies to build oil and gas pipelines from Central Asia to Western and Asian markets. The author also discusses the controversial changes in American attitudes toward the Taliban—from early support to recent bombings of Osama Bin Laden’s hideaway and other Taliban-protected terrorist bases—and how they have influenced the stability of the region.

Israel/Palestine, Alan Dowty
18 Alan Dowty Israel/Palestine
Cambridge Polity 2009 0745642438 / 9780745642437 Paperback Very Good
What explains the peculiar intensity and evident intractability of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? Of all the "hot spots" in the world today, the apparently endless clash between Jews and Arabs in the Middle East seems unique in its longevity and resistance to resolution. Is this conflict really different from other ethnic and nationalist confrontations, and if so, in what way? In this fully revised and updated second edition of his highly respected introductory text, Alan Dowty demystifies the conflict by putting it in broad historical perspective, identifying its roots, and tracing its evolution up to the current impasse. His account offers a clear analytic framework for understanding transformations over time, and in doing so, punctures the myths of an "age-old" conflict with an unbridgeable gap between the two sides. Rather than simply reciting historical detail, this book presents a clear overview that serves as a road map through the thicket of conflicting claims. This expanded edition also includes a new chapter on the so-called 'fourth stage' of the conflict. In this account the opposed perspectives of the two sides are presented in full, leaving readers to make their own evaluations of the issues. The book thus expresses fairly and objectively the concerns, hopes, fears, and passions of both sides, making it clear why this conflict is waged with such vehemence -- and why, for all that, there are some grounds for optimism.

The Gulag Archipelago, 1918-1956: An Experiment in Literary Investigation, Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn

New York Harper & Row 1974 0060139145 / 9780060139148 Cloth Very Good Fine w/ small tears
In this masterpiece, Solzhenitsyn has orchestrated thousands of incidents and individual histories into one narrative of unflagging power and momentum. Written in a tone that encompasses Olympian wrath, bitter calm, savage irony, and sheer comedy, it combines history, autobiography, documentary, and political analysis as it examines in its totality the Soviet apparatus of repression from its inception following the October Revolution of 1917. In this final volume of a towering work that is both a literary masterpiece and a living memorial to the untold millions of Soviet martyrs, Solzhenitsyn's epic narrative moves to its astounding and unforeseen climax. We now see that this great cathedral of a book not only commemorates those massed victims but celebrates the unquenched spirit of resistance that flickered and then burst into flame, even in Stalin's ''special camps.'' Of the Archipelago as a whole, Le Monde has said, ''It is the epic of our times. An epic is always the creation of an entire people, written by the one person who has the creative power and the genius to become the spokesman for his nation. And in this work, we hear a people speaking through the impassioned, intrepid, ironic, furious, lyrical, brutal, and often tender voice of the narrator.''

South Yorkshire Pen & Sword Books 2011 1848840853 / 9781848840850 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
Previous Owners Name On First Blank Page. This is a very rare and fascinating account of life as a modern day Legionnaire. The author describes how, with no French language ability, he approached recruiters for the French Foreign Legion in Paris and the demanding selection process that followed. When he was accepted, he and other prospective legionnaires were sent to Southern France to begin the harsh recruit training course. The mix of different nationalities and backgrounds among his fellows was enormous. New members are traditionally allowed to change their identities - the author chose to alter his age becoming 28 not 38! Elite paratrooper training followed in Corsica before the author earned his 'wings'.The FFL is never far from the front line and we read of challenging active service in former French colonies in Africa as well as during the First Gulf War, evicting Saddam Hussein from Kuwait and operations in Bosnia and Sarajevo. This is a completely authentic book that lifts the veil of mystery and myth and reveals much about the realities of service in the Foreign Legion. The author is not given to exaggeration - there is no need for it. A gripping read.

South Africa is one of the most complex and troubled nations on earth. It is the only country whose divisions are legally endorsed, whose isolation is deliberate and whose internal biases are so pointedly lopsided. The Mind of South Africa is a unique survey which encompasses the history, culture and the warped mythology of apartheid by which the country is still held hostage. Allister Sparks, distinguished former editor of the Rand Daily Mail, recounts the full story of South Africa's agonizing drama - and, amazingly, remains an optimist about its future.

The Wind that Swept Mexico: The History of the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1942, Anita Brenner
35 Anita Brenner The Wind that Swept Mexico: The History of the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1942
Austin, TX University of Texas Press 1971 0292790244 / 9780292790247 Paperback Good
There are some highlights and notations through the book. The Mexican Revolution began in 1910 with the overthrow of dictator Porfirio Díaz. The Wind That Swept Mexico, originally published in 1943, was the first book to present a broad account of that revolution in its several different phases. In concise but moving words and in memorable photographs, this classic sweeps the reader along from the false peace and plenty of the Díaz era through the doomed administration of Madero, the chaotic years of Villa and Zapata, Carranza and Obregón, to the peaceful social revolution of Cárdenas and Mexico's entry into World War II. The photographs were assembled from many sources by George R. Leighton with the assistance of Anita Brenner and others. Many of the prints were cleaned and rephotographed by the distinguished photographer Walker Evans.

New York Columbia University Press 2009 0231701128 / 9780231701129 Hard Cover Used As New Very Good
Antonio Giustozzi gathers a renowned cast of journalists, experts, and academics to answer the most pressing questions regarding the Taliban today. Each contributor possesses extensive knowledge of the insurgency's latest developments, decoding its structure and organization as it operates within specific regions and provinces. They analyze the new Taliban as it expands: from the new south, where they hold sway; to the southeast, where they struggle to penetrate; from the west and the northeast, now in the initial stages of infiltration; to the provinces surrounding Kabul, which have been unexpectedly and quickly occupied. Along with these advances, contributors review current theories for defeating the strategies and propaganda of the new Taliban. Issues covered include the strengths and weaknesses of the organization; the nature of its networks and whether they are based on traditional ties of kin and ethnicity or more institutional chains of command; its success at maintaining unity, even when faced with attrition in the field; the consequences of unruly leaders and conflicts over rule; the group's exploitation of the opium trade; the factors that have contributed to a resurgence in Kabul; and the extent to which Taliban leaders have imposed strategy among the rank and file, despite immense geographical challenges and poorly functioning communication systems. Guided by the wisdom and expertise of a celebrated, bestselling author, Decoding the New Taliban is a critical tool for comprehending this dangerously chimerical, cleverly resurgent threat.

Caesar, Cicero & Cleopatra: What really happened?, Arthur J. Paone
44 Arthur J. Paone Caesar, Cicero & Cleopatra: What really happened?
Arthur J. Paone 2014 097463669X / 9780974636696 Paperback New
CAESAR COMES ALIVE Arthur Paone, a retired attorney living in Belmar, NJ, with his wife of 34 years, has taken a memorable period in the history of Western civilization and brought it alive on the page for the modern reader in a vivid and completely engaging narrative. The reader will find quite caught up in it, and enjoy both the story and the refresher course on this critical period in Roman history, as Paone stays close to known historic facts. Most impressive is his skillful treatment of his principle protagonist, Julius Caesar. Considering his legendary status in western history, and the fact that books about him would fill a large library, developing him as a quasi-fictional character was a risky and courageous undertaking. But Paone pulled it off, and he did it with style. Caesar truly comes alive here as an understandable and very human individual. Paone shows Caesar as a civic leader, a politician, a husband and lover, a father, a military strategist, and as a hero and a visionary. But he does even more than this. He also shows us, in a most persuasive way, the emotional, intellectual, and moral qualifies that made him such a legendary figure; that made him that rare and extraordinary human being whose accomplishments would live on for many centuries beyond his own relatively short life. The reader will come away from this actually understanding the man Caesar, and also how he achieved his greatness. The supporting actors, Cicero and Cleopatra, likewise come alive for the reader. The story also has a robust contemporary echo. The popular reformer who threatens the entrenched interests of the privileged elite certainly has powerful echoes in today's poisonous political environment. It is no small accomplishment on Paone's part to be able to capture the essence of such an extraordinary character and get it down on the page in narrative form in such a believable and engaging way.

Bible and Sword: England and Palestine from the Bronze Age to Balfour, Barbara W. Tuchman
48 Barbara W. Tuchman Bible and Sword: England and Palestine from the Bronze Age to Balfour
New York Ballantine 1984 0345314271 / 9780345314277 Paperback Good
Sturdy. No underlining. Light wear. There is a water stain on the last blank page. Historically, the British were drawn to the Holy Land for two major reasons: first, to translate the Bible into English and, later, to control the road to India and access to the oil of the Middle East. With the lucidity and vividness that characterize all her work, Barbara W. Tuchman follows these twin spiritual and imperial motives—the Bible and the sword—to their seemingly inevitable endpoint, when Britain conquered Palestine at the conclusion of World War I. At that moment, in a gesture of significance and solemnity, the Balfour Declaration of 1917 established a British-sponsored mandate for a national home for the Jewish people. Throughout this characteristically vivid account, Tuchman demonstrates that the seeds of conflict were planted in the Middle East long before the official founding of the modern state of Israel.

The 13th Mission: The Saga of a Pow at Camp Omori, Tokyo, Barbara W. Tuchman
49 Barbara W. Tuchman The 13th Mission: The Saga of a Pow at Camp Omori, Tokyo
New York Ballantine Books 1978 0345283945 / 9780345283948 Paperback Very Good
The fourteenth century reflects two contradictory images: on the one hand, a glittering time of crusades and castles, cathedrals and chivalry, and the exquisitely decorated Books of Hours; and on the other, a time of ferocity and spiritual agony, a world of chaos and the plague. Barbara Tuchman reveals both the great rhythms of history and the grain and texture of domestic life as it was lived. Here are the guilty passions, loyalties and treacheries, political assassinations, sea battles and sieges, corruption in high places and a yearning for reform, satire and humor, sorcery and demonology, and lust and sadism on the stage. Here are proud cardinals, beggars, feminists, university scholars, grocers, bankers, mercenaries, mystics, lawyers and tax collectors, and, dominating all, the knight in his valor and "furious follies," a "terrible worm in an iron cocoon."

What Went Wrong? The Clash Between Islam and Modernity in the Middle East, Bernard Lewis
50 Bernard Lewis What Went Wrong? The Clash Between Islam and Modernity in the Middle East
New York, NY Perennial 2003 0060516054 / 9780060516055 Trade Paperback Good
For centuries, the world of Islam was in the forefront of human achievement -- the foremost military and economic power in the world, the leader in the arts and sciences of civilization. Christian Europe was seen as an outer darkness of barbarism and unbelief from which there was nothing to learn or to fear. And then everything changed. The West won victory after victory, first on the battlefield and then in the marketplace. In this elegantly written volume, Bernard Lewis, a renowned authority an Islamic affairs, examines the anguished reaction of the Islamic world as it tried to make sense of how it had been overtaken, overshadowed, and dominated by the West. In a fascinating portrait of a culture in turmoil, Lewis shows how the Middle East turned its attention to understanding European weaponry, industry, government, education, and culture. He also describes how some Middle Easterners fastened blame on a series of scapegoats, while others asked not "Who did this to us?" but rather "Where did we go wrong?" With a new Afterword that addresses September 11 and its aftermath, What Went Wrong? is an urgent, accessible book that no one who is concerned with contemporary affairs will want to miss.

ESCAPE FROM JONESTOWN: Death, Danger and Adventure Deep in the Primitaive Jungles of South America, Billy Rivers
51 Billy Rivers ESCAPE FROM JONESTOWN: Death, Danger and Adventure Deep in the Primitaive Jungles of South America
Xulon Press 2012 1624197442 / 9781624197444 Paperback Used Like New
More than 900 lives were lost in the tragic mass suicides in Jonestown, Guyana in 1978. The entire civilized world was shaken by front-page photographs of hundreds of brightly clothed bodies lying all around the Jonestown Pavilion, led to their senseless deaths by an atheist cult leader named Jim Jones. In this fast paced, action packed story, Billy Rivers begins by accurately recounting the demise of the Jim Jones cult, quoting directly from the "Jonestown Death Tape," an actual recording made while the adults were drinking the deadly poison and giving it to their children. On that tragic day, a young man and a ten-year old boy escape into the tangled, snake infested jungles of Guyana where death lurks at every turn, whether by anaconda, bushmaster, crocodile, or jaguar. Escape from Jonestown is not for the squeamish. There are hard fought, life and death struggles against man and beast - and death does not always lose. When a widowed missionary, the young and beautiful Rebekah Hamilton, and a corrupt army sergeant named Claspen Dortin enter the story, a chain of events unfolds that will keep you up late, turning the pages as faith and courage are tested to their outer limits. You will most certainly not be disappointed when you join private investigator Terrance Clark and ten-year old Timmy on their death defying ride through the unforgiving jungles of South America where just surviving the night is a victory. Author Billy Rivers grew up in rough and tumble "big timber" country where wild salmon, deer, elk, bears, and mountain lions abounded. He attended school on the reservation and learned to hunt, fish, fall trees, set chokers, and pull wood from the green chain at the local sawmills. His stories are must reads for all lovers of adventure - young and old alike. www.escapefromjonestown.com

Studies in British Military Thought: Debates With Fuller and Liddell Hart, Brian Holden Reid
53 Brian Holden Reid Studies in British Military Thought: Debates With Fuller and Liddell Hart
Lincoln, NE University of Nebraska Press 1998 0803239270 / 9780803239272 Cloth Used As New As New
One page corner has light crease from a fold. John Frederick Charles Fuller (1878–1966), British soldier, military analyst, and war historian, is considered the father of modern armored (tank) warfare—first as planner of the attack at Cambrai in November 1917, and then as author of a number of works that challenged traditional British military thought. His ideas were resisted in his own country but had a major impact on German and Soviet military doctrine. Sir Basil Liddell Hart (1895–1970) was also a British military historian and analyst of note and authored influential military histories covering figures from Scipio Africanus to Field Marshal Rommel. In the twelve analytical essays in Studies in British Military Thought Brian Holden Reid examines these two figures whose ideas have influenced the interpretation of events in military history from antiquity to the Cold War. He compares and contrasts their views on tactics, operational art and strategy, and war as a social phenomenon. Additionally, he discusses the radically different temperaments of the two and shows how their differences shaped their work in important ways. In so doing, he continues to bring their ideas to students and practitioners of modern warfare and raises fundamental issues concerning the nature of war.

Pilgrimage in Early Christian Jordan: A Literary and Archaeological Guide, Burton MacDonald
55 Burton MacDonald Pilgrimage in Early Christian Jordan: A Literary and Archaeological Guide
Oxford Oxbow Books 2010 097740949X / 9780977409495 Trade Paperback Very Good
An interest in places of pilgrimage is very much a part of the life of many people in the modern world. For Christians, it is the Holy Land that holds specific interest - the area where the events described in the Bible, in both the Old and the New Testament, are located. This volume focuses on early Christian pilgrimage in Jordan, the region east of the Jordan River which has so far been little explored by pilgrims and tourists to the Holy Land. Yet many biblical events are said to have taken place here: Moses seeing the Promised Land, the ascension of the prophet Elijah and John the Baptist's ministry and beheading, to name but a few. This book takes an innovative approach to studying these sites. After a general introduction to each site, its biblical significance and a citation of the relevant biblical sources with commentary, the author lists the literary sources that pertain specifically to early Christian pilgrimage activity. This information is complemented with a description of the early Christian archaeological remains found at the site and their interpretation. Illustrated throughout with maps, plans, and photographs and including travel directions as well as suggestions about visits to the sites, this volume is made for scholars, pilgrims and tourists with an interest in early Christian and modern pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Contemporary Slavery: Researching Child Domestic Servitude, C. Nana Derby
56 C. Nana Derby Contemporary Slavery: Researching Child Domestic Servitude
Lanham, MD University Press of America 2009 0761845127 / 9780761845126 Paperback Good
Several page corners are creased from folds. Light curling. Some highlighting. This book investigates child domestic servitude in Ghana, showing the process of the children's recruitment into domestic servitude, revealing their working conditions, and detailing the methods of compensation. It seeks to answer the question of whether child domestic servants are contemporary slaves. The findings show that elite households in Ghana exploit children from rural regions. This is because they have taken advantage of a historical practice that allowed children to live with older members of their extended families and provide domestic services. In return, they are to be given the chance to receive formal education or to learn a trade. The author's research techniques helped overcome the usual methodical difficulties that exclude child domestic servants from mainstream research on child labor exploitation. The author's approach allowed observation of the servants, not as isolated individuals, but as members of groups whose activities influenced their status and life chances. Most of the participants in this research provided vivid and chilling accounts of domestic servitude in Ghana. The book provides a glimpse of the contemporary slavery that is present in Ghana today.

On War, Carl Von Clausewitz
58 Carl Von Clausewitz On War
New York, NY Penguin Books 1982 0140444270 / 9780140444278 Trade Paperback Good
Several light creases on front cover. Combining military theory and raw accounts of its practice, Carl von Clausewitz's treatise "On War" has had a profound influence on subsequent thinking on warfare. This "Penguin Classics" edition is edited with an introduction by Anatol Rapoport. Writing at the time of Napoleon's greatest campaigns, Prussian soldier and writer Carl von Clausewitz created this landmark treatise on the art of warfare, which presented war as part of a coherent system of political thought. In line with Napoleon's own military actions, he illustrated the need to annihilate the enemy and make a strong display of one's power in an 'absolute war' without compromise. But he was also careful to distinguish between war and politics, arguing that war could only be justified when debate was no longer adequate, and that if undertaken, its aim should ultimately be to improve the wellbeing of the nation, pioneering the notion of war as 'politics by other means'. This edition contains a detailed introduction, examining von Clausewitz's skill and reputation as a writer, philosopher and political thinker, as well as a bibliography, notes and a glossary. Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831) was a Prussian soldier and writer who entered the Prussian Military at the age of twelve with the rank of Lance-Corporal, serving in the Rhine campaign from 1793 to 1794. In 1801 he joined the Berlin Military Academy, where he studied Kant and attracted the attention of General Gerhard von Scharnhorst, whom he later helped to reform the Prussian army. More a philosopher than a soldier, Clausewitz's fame rests on the enduring success of "On War" (Vom Kriege), unfinished at the time of his death and published posthumously by his wife, in 1832.

Spokane, WA World Outside My Shoes 1450780806 / 9781450780803 Paperback Used Like New
Light crease on the bottom corner of the first blank page. Clean and unmarked. Why did Carl Wilkens decide to remain in Rwanda in 1994, with a genocide swirling around him? How did he and his wife Teresa maintain communication during the one-hundred days of terror when Tutsis were being hounded to death by Hutu militia extremists? How does the only American who chose to stay-in order to protect two Tutsi household workers-look back on that fearful time? Working from tapes made for his family, which chronicle daily events from the sublime to the horrific, Carl reconstructs in fascinating detail both personal and political events triggered by the April 6 plane crash assassination of the Presidents of Rwanda and Burundi. He takes us through the poignant good-bye to his family, as they join the mass exodus of expatriates leaving this dangerous situation. He affirms his presence in the neighborhood he has known for four years, by standing barefoot in the middle of the dusty road, waving farewell. - Helen Kweskin,
