The Drama of Scripture: Finding Our Place in the Biblical Story, Craig G. Bartholomew and Michael W. Goheen
24 Craig G. Bartholomew and Michael W. Goheen The Drama of Scripture: Finding Our Place in the Biblical Story
Grand Rapids, MI Baker Academic 2004 0801027462 / 9780801027468 Paperback Used Like New
The story of the Bible and its account of God's action in the world give meaning to our lives and provide us with the foundation for our actions. The Drama of Scripture is an introduction to the basic story line and theology of the Bible. In considering the biblical story, the authors emphasize the unity of the whole, viewing the Bible as a drama in six acts--creation, sin, Israel, Christ, church, and new creation. Two overarching themes tie the biblical story together--covenant in the Old Testament and kingdom in the New Testament. Throughout, the authors suggest, God is revealed through the story and calls us to participate in his drama.

Trial of Christ: From a Legal and Scriptural Viewpoint, David K. Breed
26 David K. Breed Trial of Christ: From a Legal and Scriptural Viewpoint
Grand Rapids, MI Baker Book House 1982 0801008298 / 9780801008290 Mass Market Paperback Very Good
Could Jesus have gotten off on a technicality? Mr. Breed, a Missouri attorney, presents the brief for acquittal, and then withdraws his plea--on the basis that Jesus is fulfilling an ancient prophecy, and must die anyway, to save mankind. He points out major discrepancies between Jewish and Roman legal procedures and the gospel accounts. For instance, the Sanhedrin, the Jewish supreme court, would never have met on the Sabbath, nor condemned a man to death on the same day as his trial. Roman law also gave defendants many rights we now take for granted, such as the right to a public trial, and to cross-examine witnesses, which were not followed either. Why care about this, the ultimate moot point? In particular, the actions of the Sanhedrin in the Gospel narratives were used to inflame anti-Semitism for centuries. This toxic stereotype seeped into every aspect of the Jewish-Christian relationship (see this book). While Mr. Breed does not address this issue directly, it is implicit in his thesis. Some will say that Breed's conclusion is undermined by his evidence. However, this book demonstrates that a devout Christian can use Biblical criticism to reinforce their faith, and even renew it. Whether you believe that Jesus was completely historical, or a fable based on ancient memes of a dying god, this book will provide much food for thought.

The Trial of Christ: A Criminal Lawyer Defends Jesus, Dee Wampler
28 Dee Wampler The Trial of Christ: A Criminal Lawyer Defends Jesus
Springfield Dee Wampler 2003 Trade Paperback New
Some 40 years after Julius Caesar was murdered in teh Senate House at Rome, a little boy was born in a tiny village near the southeastern corner of the shores of the Mediterranean. More stories have been told about htis little boy than any other human being. One of these stories tells how He came to die It is likely that half the members of hte human race, whether they are Christian or not, have heard of Jesus and how He came to die on teh cross by a judgment of a Jewish court and Roman Judge nearly 2,000 years ago. It was great mystery to the men who knew Him, and remains a great mystery. There is no way to explain how it was possible to be man and God at the same time. No one can know in advance what is true, and at the same time profess to be searching for it. Even the best detective in the world could not be completely successful in finding out exactly what happened on that day so long ago. As a criminal trial attorney, I will explain what happened.

The Legend and the Apostle: The Battle for Paul in Story and Canon, Dennis Ronald MacDonald
29 Dennis Ronald MacDonald The Legend and the Apostle: The Battle for Paul in Story and Canon
Philadelphia, PA Westminster Press 1983 0664244645 / 9780664244644 Paperback Very Good
The apostle Paul--antifeminist conformist, or social radical? Combining New Testament studies with folkloristic methods to search for the true identity of Paul, the author sheds new light on the apocryphal Acts of Paul and the Pastoral Epistles of the canonical New Testament. With this book, the legends surrounding the apostle have been rescued from near oblivion and properly placed in the Pauline tradition. Formulated in the days of early Christianity and handed down through the centuries, they cast new light on Paul's views about the ordination of women, the forms of Christian community, and the meaning of the gospel for politics, society, and sexuality.

How the Bible Became the Bible, Donald L. O'Dell
30 Donald L. O'Dell How the Bible Became the Bible
West Conshohocken, PA Infinity 2006 0741429934 / 9780741429933 Paperback Used As New
Sturdy and clean. Church Library name is stamped on the first blank page. Library card sleeve is attached to the last blank page. How did a collection of scrolls, laws, songs, poems, narratives, and letters get put together, declared sacred, and called the Holy Bible? The author makes the case that our human nature has always had a strong desire for simplistic, black-and-white, religious beliefs – a desire to know that one’s right. This quells doubt and, as such, is fear-based. This inclination had its beginnings in the Old Testament, led to abuses in Israel’s Temple-State system, and influenced the documents that were eventually included and excluded from the New Testament.

The Apocrypha, Edgar J. Goodspeed (Translator)
33 Edgar J. Goodspeed (Translator) The Apocrypha
New York Vintage Books 1989 0679724524 / 9780679724520 Paperback Very Good
Clean, sturdy and unmarked. The Apocrypha consists of the books that are found in the Greek version of the Jewish Bible--the Septuagint, the earliest complete version of the Bible we possess--but that were not included in the final, canonical version of the Hebrew Bible. For this reason, they were called “Apocrypha,” the hidden or secret books, and while they formed part of the original King James version of 1611, they are no longer included in modern Bibles. Yet they include such important works as The First Book of Maccabees, the Wisdom of Solomon, Ecclesiasticus, and the stories of Susanna, Tobit, and Judith, and other works of great importance for the history of the Jews in the period between the rebuilding of the Temple and the time of Jesus, and thus for the background of the New Testament. These works have also had a remarkable impact on writers and artists. Beyond this, they are often as powerful as anything in the canonical Bible. The translation into contemporary English is by Edgar J. Goodspeed.

Light discoloration on page edges. In this second book of his popular lexical trilogy, Frederick Buechner profiles more than 125 of the Bible's most holy and profane people -- and one whale. In his lively and witty prose, Buechner brings to life such moments from scripture as: Adam's pangs of regret for a remembered Eden Delilah's last glimpse of Samson as they dragged him away Lazarus's first impressions upon rising from the dead To read Peculiar Treasures is to realize that many of these legendary figures are not who we thought they were. Grand Rapids, MI Baker Books 2000 0801065321 / 9780801065323 Paperback Very Good
With the success of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, Christians everywhere saw Jesus as a real man, perhaps for the first time. They were captivated and wanted to know more. Now, The Jesus Conspiracy, a modern dramatization of the known facts of Jesus' life, digs even deeper to present a startling vision of Christ through the lens of the historical Jesus. By pairing modern and historical investigation, Thomas offers readers current archaeological and anthropological discoveries that fulfill the desire to know more about the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. He draws from non-canonical works, such as the Gospel of Nicodemus, to bring the social and cultural world of the first century alive for the modern reader. With some surprising conclusions, this book is an excellent resource for skeptics and believers, especially those who want to gain a deeper understanding of the world in which Jesus lived and died.

Green Forest, AR Master Books 2005 0890513899 / 9780890513897 Paperback Very Good
Very light wear. No underlines. Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance...Isaiah 40:15 A fascinating title from creationist icon Henry Morris Perfect for Christians who focus on apologetics Focuses on a rare, but important topic: God's plan for individual countries In the Bible, we see the interest God has in humans and their cultures. In the Old and New Testaments, the Hebrew and Greek words for "nations" occurs 720 times. Many of the nations that were given land and resources during Bible times have now passed into history, such as the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Hittites. We also know from secular history that civilizations like the Aztecs and Greeks are also largely removed from the scene. All this is due to those nations rejection of God’s laws. Indeed, of the 200 nations in existence today, only a handful actively seek God.

Understanding the Dead Sea Scrolls: A Reader from the Biblical Archaeology Review, Hershel Shanks
54 Hershel Shanks Understanding the Dead Sea Scrolls: A Reader from the Biblical Archaeology Review
New York Random House 1992 0679414487 / 9780679414483 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
Light wear on several pages. No markings. A groundbreaking anthology that demolishes the myths -- and reveals the true significance -- of the greatest archaeological discovery of our time. Ever since their initial discovery in 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls have aroused excitement, jealousy, and not a little dread among some who feared their contents might undermine the foundations of Judaism and Christianity. For more than 35 years the majority of scroll texts remained the intellectual property of an exclusive coterie of scholars. Recently, however, the Biblical Archaeology Review succeeded in breaking that monopoly. This path-clearing volume is an illuminating assessment of what these texts reveal about a lost era in the history of two world religions, Christianity and rabbinic Judaism. Were the Dead Sea Scrolls written by the Essenes, an ascetic sect of Jews that may have included John the Baptist among its members? Is the Copper Scroll a secret map to the treasures of the Jerusalem Temple? In what way do these books prefigure the teachings of early Christianity? Additional chapters address the controversies surrounding the Scrolls' discovery and their long suppression -- including the possible role of the Vatican and charges of anti-Semitism on the part of a former chief editor of the official scroll publication team.

Saint Paul: The Right Man at the Right Time, Irving L. Brittle, Jr.
55 Irving L. Brittle, Jr. Saint Paul: The Right Man at the Right Time
Bloomington, IN WestBow Press 2014 1490844511 / 9781490844510 Paperback Very Good
Light creasing on bottom corner of the back cover. Saint Paul, the Right Man at the Right Time was written to get a comprehensive biographical sketch of Saint Paul including his early life, his life as a Pharisee, his direct contact with Jesus Christ on the Damascus road, his conversion from the many teachings of the Torah, and his God-given mission as the Apostle to the Gentiles. The times in which he lived proved that God chose him as his apostle due to his brilliance and his ability to communicate in both written and verbal forms, not only in Hebrew, but in the Greek language, which was important in that historical time. His words and letters are as relevant today as they were in the first century of Christianity, and his teachings are still presented in Protestant churches and sermons today. My hope is one may read Saint Paul, the Right Man at the Right Time and have the ability to teach a basic class on the life of Saint Paul and encourage students to further their understanding of the importance of this biblical figure. The work touches on his theology, but I was more intent on giving the reader a personal overview of the man we know as Saint Paul. He very much lived in a time trying to spread a new religion in Christ that was very different from the belief systems of the Jews and Gentiles in the first century.
